The opening Test of the five-Test series between England and India marks the start of the second edition of the World Test Championship, which runs from 2021 to 2023. India finished at the top of the points table of 2019-2021 WTC but the second-placed New Zealand were the eventual champions of the inaugural edition when they defeated the Virat Kohli-led side by eight wickets in the final held in Southampton in June 2021. Nine teams will again be competing for the Test mace, with all of them playing six series each: three home and three away.

About the WTC

The WTC is a global event involving nine teams who play bilateral Test series over a two-year span, with the top two teams at the end of the cycle competing in the final to determine the champions. While the points percentage system, which was introduced late in the previous WTC cycle, will be used for this edition as well, the ICC decided a change in the distribution of points. Unlike the previous tournament where every series carried a maximum of 120 points immaterial of its length, in WTC2 a team will get 12 points for a win, four for a draw and six for a tie.

WTC match summary

England tour of West Indies, 2022

First Test, Antigua: There was hardly any help for the bowlers as West Indies and England settled for a draw in the opening Test. Jonny Bairstow's 140 helped England post 311 in their first innings. West Indies replied by putting up a total of 375, with Nkrumah Bonner scoring a 355-ball 123. Zak Crawley and Joe Root scored centuries in the second innings to help England to 349/6 decl. Needing 286 for victory, West Indies batted for 70.1 overs to finish with 147/4, with Bonner and Jason Holder scoring unbeaten 30s having faced more than 100 deliveries each.

Second Test, Barbados: Another drawn encounter and another pitch were the bowlers found hardly any assistance. Joe Root (153), Ben Stokes (120) and Dan Lawrence (91) helped England to 507/9 decl. West Indies batted for 187/5 overs to post 411, with Kraigg Brathwaite scoring 160 off 489 and Jermaine Blackwood hitting 102 off 215. England batted positively in their second innings to post 185/6 decl. in 39.5 overs. An unbeaten 56 off 184 balls by Brathwaite meant that the game ended in a draw as West Indies finished with 135/5 in 65 overs in a chase of 282.

Third Test, Grenada: On a deck where it moved around considerably, the West Indies emerged victorious by 10 wickets to take home the Richards-Botham trophy. England could muster only 204 and 120 in their first and second innings respectively. It could have been worse for the visitors in the first innings but Saqib Mahmood and Jack Leach stitched a key alliance of 90 for the final wicket.

Meanwhile, for the West Indies, Joshua Da Silva turned out to be the mainstay as he scored exactly 100 to steer West Indies towards safer waters after they were precariously placed at 128 for 7 in the first dig. Kyle Mayers then followed it by bowling scrambled seam to bag a five-for and clean up the tourists for a paltry score. The openers - Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell - provided the finishing touches by scoring the required 28 runs.

Australia tour of Pakistan, 2022

First Test, Rawalpindi: Australia touring Pakistan for the first time in 24 years created a lot of interest to the series but on a flat wicket, both teams settled for a dull draw with only 14 wickets falling across three innings while 1187 runs were scored in total. The pitch, subsequently was rated below average and received a demerit point. Azhar Ali scored 185 while Imam-ul-Haq struck 157 as Pakistan posted 476/4 decl., having batted for 162 overs. Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne struck 90s while David Warner and Steven Smith hit half-centuries as Australia finished with 459. In the second innings, Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq scored unbeaten hundreds as the match ended in a draw.

Second Test, Karachi: Pakistan managed a hard-fought draw in the second Test to ensure the series scoreline remained 0-0. Australia's first-innings total of 556/9 decl. was managed on the back of Usman Khawaja's 160, Alex Carey's 93 and Steven Smith's 72. Pakistan, in reply, were bowled out for 148, with Mitchell Starc picking up three wickets. Australia batted again and declared their second innings on 97/2, leaving Pakistan with 506 to get. Babar Azam scored 196 while Mohammad Rizwan (104*) and Abdullah Shafique (96) were the other major contributors as Pakistan held Australia to a draw, finishing with 443/7. despite Nathan Lyon's four-wicket haul.

Third Test, Lahore: A clinical performance from Australia helped them register a 115-run victory in the third Test to take the series 1-0. Usman Khawaja was the star with the bat, scoring 91 in the first innings and 104 in the second. Australia's first innings total of 391 - with Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah bagging four wickets each - was followed by Pakistan being bowled out for 268 after being 214 for 2 at one stage, as Pat Cummins picked up five while Mitchell Starc got four. Australia posted 227/3 decl. in their second essay, leaving Pakistan with a target of 351. Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam struck half-centuries but Nathan Lyon's five-wicket haul meant that Pakistan were bowled out for 235 as Australia registered their first Test series win in Asia since beating Sri Lanka 1-0 in 2011.

Sri Lanka tour of India, 2022

First Test, Mohali: India began the series with an emphatic innings and 222-run victory in the opening Test which was also Virat Kohli's 100th Test appearance and Rohit Sharma first Test as captain. India left out Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane for the series while Ravindra Jadeja returned to the side after a lengthy injury break. His 175, along with Rishabh Pant's 96, powered India to 574/8 decl. Sri Lanka managed only 174 in their first innings, with Jadeja continuing to torment them with a fifer. Asked to follow on, they could only post 178 as R Ashwin and Jadeja picked up four wickets each.

Second Test, Bengaluru: Shreyas Iyer was the star in the pink-ball Test at the Chinnaswamy stadium, scoring half-centuries in both innings. He fell only eight short of a well-deserved ton in the first innings as India posted 252 on a Day 1 wicket that was offering a lot of turn. Jasprit Bumrah then bagged five to restrict Sri Lanka to 109. India posted 303/9 decl. in their second essay, with Pant also scoring a half-century. Needing 447 to win, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne scored a fighting hundred but India struck at regular intervals, with R Ashwin picking up four and Bumrah bagging three, as the visitors were bowled out for 208 to lose by 238 runs.

South Africa tour of New Zealand, 2022

First Test, Christchurch: Matt Henry announced his return to the Test team with a devastating first-innings spell of 7 for 23 in 15 overs as South Africa were bundled out for 95 after being asked to bat first. The hosts then proceeded to pile on the runs through a well-composed century from Henry Nicholls, a 49 from nightwatchman Neil Wagner and a 96 from Tom Blundell. But there was more misery to come for South Africa as Colin de Grandhomme (45) and Henry (58 off 68) pushed New Zealand to 482.

Tim Southee led the way in the second innings as South Africa lost three wickets for just four runs. Despite Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne attempting recovery, South Africa just couldn't get going and lost wickets at regular intervals. In the end, they were bundled out for 111 in their second innings, losing the fixture by an innings and 276 runs.

Second Test, Christchurch: South Africa hit back superbly in the following fixture, as batters fared far better and Kagiso Rabada led the way with the ball. South Africa opted to bat first this time and gave a far better account of themselves, amassing 364 thanks to Sarel Erwee's 106 and sizable contributions from Dean Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj. In reply, New Zealand's top-order faltered as they were down to 91 for 5, but Daryl Mitchell and Colin de Grandhomme rescued them with a 133-run stand. New Zealand still folded for 293, 71 short of SA's total.

Though the visitors' top-order also wobbled, a fine, unbeaten 136 from Verreynne put South Africa in control of the fixture. A 45 from van der Dussen and an enterprising 47 off 34 from Rabada pushed South Africa to 354 for 9 when they declared. With a massive total to defend, South Africa's bowlers dug their heels into New Zealand's line-up and bowled them out for 224 despite Devon Conway's fighting 92 off 188. Rabada, who picked five in the first innings, added three more to his match tally as South Africa recorded a 198 run victory.

Bangladesh tour of New Zealand, 2022

First Test, Bay Oval: Ebadot Hossain snared a six-for in the second innings of the opening Test as Bangladesh charted history in Bay Oval with an eight-wicket win. The visitors chased down the modest target of 40 in the 17th over. The famous win was set up due to fifties from Liton Das, Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque, which in turn had given Bangladesh a substantial first innings lead of 130. New Zealand then could muster a mere 169. At 136 for 2, with Ross Taylor and Will Young at the crease, New Zealand seemed to be heading towards safety when they suffered a collapse, losing their last eight wickets for just 33 runs. Young top-scored for New Zealand in the second essay while Devond Conway scored a hundred in the first.

Second Test, Hagley Oval: On a helpful wicket for the seamers, New Zealand hit back in the second Test at Hagley Oval with a resounding innings and 117 runs win. Trent Boult took a five-for in the first while Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson combined to snare seven scalps in the second innings as Bangladesh were bowled out for 126 and 288 respectively. Liton Das' superlative hundred in the second innings was Bangladesh's consolation from the Test match. Earlier, New Zealand had ended up with 521 for 6 declared on the back of Tom Latham's massive 252.

India tour of South Africa, 2021-22

First Test, Centurion: Coming into the series as favourites, India made a victorious start as they registered a 113-run victory. KL Rahul top-scored for them in the first innings with 123 while Mayank Agarwal scored 60 as India posted 327 despite Lungi Ngidi's six-wicket haul. Mohammed Shami then bagged a five-wicket haul to restrict South Africa to 197, with Temba Bavuma's 52 being the highest score. India were bowled out for 174 in the second essay as Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen picked up four wickets apiece. Needing 305 for victory, South Africa ended up being bowled out for 191 despite a fighting 77 from skipper Dean Elgar. Jasprit Bumrah and Shami picked up three wickets apiece.

Second Test, Johannesburg: Dean Elgar's unbeaten 96 in the second innings helped South Africa register a seven wicket win as they chased down a target of 240. Marco Jansen, Duanne Olivier and Kagiso Rabada bowled with a lot of steam as India could only manage 202 in their first innings, with KL Rahul's 50 being the highest contribution. Half-centuries from Keegan Petersen and Temba Bavuma helped South Africa gain a slender lead as they finished with 229, with Shardul Thakur bagging seven wickets. Fifties from Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane helped India to 266 in the second innings, with Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Jansen bagging three wickets each. But a fine knock from Elgar ensured that South Africa got over the line to level the series.

Third Test, Cape Town: Keegan Petersen was the star performer for South Africa with the bat in the third Test as the hosts recorded another seven wicket win to take the series 2-1. Virat Kohli's 79 was the backbone of India's 223 in the first innings, with Kagiso Rabada (4-73) and Marco Jansen (3-55) bagging most of the wickets. Petersen then scored 72 but India managed to take small lead by bowling South Africa out for 210, with Jasprit Bumrah picking up a fifer. India suffered a top-order collapse in the second innings but Rishabh Pant's 100 not out helped them finish with 198, leaving South Africa with a target of 212. Petersen's 82, along with useful knocks from Dean Elgar, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma helped South Africa to the target.

Ashes, 2021-22

First Test, Gabba: On an unusually green surface, Australia crushed England by nine wickets. England, who opted to bat, were bundled out for a mere 147. Pat Cummins, the Australian spearhead, finished with a five-for. Travis Head then built on Cummins's good work with a breezy 148-ball 152. Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood finished with three scalps each for the visitors. England did put up a fight the second time around, with Dawid Malan and Joe Root notching up fine fifties. But once Nathan Lyon broke the 162-run stand, England crumbled and were snuffed out for 297. Cameron Green made the all important breakthrough when he dislodged Root for a 165-ball 89. Australia then chased down the paltry target of 20 for the loss of Alex Carey's wicket.

Second Test, Adelaide: Marnus Labuschagne scored a ton while Steve Smith ended up with 93 to set up Australia's sizeable first innings total of 473. For the tourists, Dawid Malan and Joe Root once again composed fifties but couldn't convert starts into big scores. The tourists also lost their last seven wickets for 79 runs and were bundled out for 236; Mitchell Starc finishing with a four-for. Australia then declared their second innings at 230/9 and nipped out England for 192 to go 2-0 up in the series. Jos Buttler played out 207 balls for 26 runs and tried to take England to safety but he had too much to do. On the other hand, Jhye Richardson bagged a five-wicket haul for the home side.

Third Test, MCG: Scott Boland turned out to be the hero as he returned astonishing figures of 6 for 7 to help Australia earn a thumping innings and 14-run victory. England could manage a mere 68 in their second dig as they slipped to a heavy loss. Among England's batters, only Joe Root crossed the double-digit mark in the second innings. Earlier, on the back of Marcus Harris' patient fifty, Australia had taken a healthy first innings lead of 82. James Anderson bowled with control and nous to pick up 4 for 33. For Australia, Cummins and Lyon had snared three each to ensure England would finish with just 185 in their first essay. Eventually, the Test match belonged to Boland - only the fourth indigenous cricketer to represent Australia in Test cricket. The victory also meant that Australia retained the Ashes.

Fourth Test, SCG: James Anderson and Stuart Broad played out the last two overs of the SCG Test to ensure a thrilling draw for England and also end their run of losses in the Ashes in Australia. Broad also played out a little more than eight overs with the left-arm spinner Jack Leach for the ninth wicket. Earlier, Zak Crawley and Ben Stokes had composed fifties for the tourists. Meanwhile, Usman Khawaja cracked a hundred for the home team to power his side to a good score of 416 for 8 declared in the first essay. Stuart Broad bagged a five-for on a relatively flat deck. On the back of Jonny Bairstow's resolute hundred, England replied with 294 while Australia aggregated 265/6 declared in their second innings to set England a target in excess of 380.

Fifth Test, Hobart: Australia ended the series with a 4-0 lead after thrashing England by 146 runs in the final Test in Hobart. Travis Head got another ton as Australia accumulated 303 on a green seamer. Broad and Wood took three scalps apiece. However, Woakes, who came in for Anderson (rested), was disappointing on the greenest wicket of the series. England could eke out only 188 in response, with Chris Woakes top-scoring with 36. Wood then bowled with pace and fire as Australia could muster 155 in their second innings. Just that the visitors collapsed from a decent position - 82 for 1 - to be bundled out for a mere 124 to crash to another defeat.

New Zealand tour of India, 2021-22

First Test, Kanpur: On a slow Kanpur wicket, New Zealand escaped with a draw by the skin of their teeth. Rachin Ravindra, on his Test debut, was the star performer on the final day as he remained unbeaten on 18 off 91 to take the visitors to safe waters. The fading light also came into play at the fag end of the final day and the stumps were drawn with around 10 minutes to go for the end of the day's play, with New Zealand being reduced to 165 for 9. The Test will also be remembered for Tim Southee's 8-wicket haul and Shreyas Iyer's remarkable Test debut, with the batter compiling a hundred and a fifty.

Second Test, Mumbai: Despite Ajaz Patel becoming only the third ever to bag 10 wickets in an innings, New Zealand ended up losing the match by an emphatic 372-run margin. Mayank Agarwal starred in the first innings after India opted to bat, scoring 150 in their total of 325. New Zealand were skittled out for a paltry 62, with R Ashwin bagging four wickets and Mohammad Siraj getting three. India decided to bat again, posting 276/7 decl. with Agarwal getting a half-century. Needing 540 for victory, New Zealand ended up being bowled out for 167, with Ashwin and Jayant Yadav bagging four wickets apiece.

West Indies tour of Sri Lanka, 2021-22

First Test, Galle: Dimuth Karunaratne and the spinners powered Sri Lanka to a 1-0 lead in the series against the West Indies. In the first Test in Galle, the hosts managed 386 and 191 for 4 declared. The West Indies could only muster 230 and 160. Karunaratne scored a hundred and a fifty. Meanwhile, the spin trio of Lasith Embuldeniya, Praveen Jayawickrama and Ramesh Mendis shared 18 scalps between them. In West Indies' second dig, N Bonner and Joshua Da Silva scored fifties, but it wasn't enough to guide the visitors to a draw.

Second Test, Galle: Dhananjaya de Silva's unbeaten 155 in the second innings set the platform for Sri Lanka's 2-0 series win as they secured a 164-run victory in the second Test. Pathum Nissanka top-scored for Sri Lanka with 73 after their opted to bat but they could only manage 204 as Veerasammy Permaul (5-35) and Jomel Warrican (4-50) triggered a collapse. Kraigg Brathwaite's 72 was the top score for West Indies in the first innings as they managed to take a 49-run lead despite Ramesh Mendis's 6-70. Sri Lanka rode on de Silva's ton and Nissanka's 66 to post 345/9 decl. in their second innings, leaving West Indies with a target of 297. This was beyond their reach as they were bowled out for 132, with Lasith Embuldeniya and Mendis both bagging five wickets each.

Pakistan tour of Bangladesh, 2021-22

First Test, Chattogram: Abid Ali, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi were the chief architects of Pakistan's comfortable eight-wicket victory versus Bangladesh in Chattogram. Abid cracked a hundred in the first and 91 in the second innings. Meanwhile, Hasan bagged a five-for in the first and Shaheen took a five-for in the second dig. On the other hand, Liton Das and Taijul Islam starred with the bat and ball for Bangladesh. But their efforts went in vain.

Second Test, Dhaka: Sajid Khan bagged eight wickets in the first innings and four in the second to star in Pakistan's victory by an innings and eight runs as they clinched a 2-0 series win. Half-centuries from Babar Azam, Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan helped Pakistan post 300/4 decl. in their first essay. Shakib Al Hasan's 33 was Bangladesh's top score as they were bowled out for only 87. Asked to follow on, Bangladesh could only manage 205 in their second innings despite Shakib's 63 as they ended up losing by a big margin.

India tour of England, 2021

First Test, Nottingham: Jasprit Bumrah's nine-wicket haul in the match, and Joe Root's first century at home after a lengthy gap were the highlights of the first Test of the 2021-23 WTC cycle while it ended in a damp finish with both teams splitting points. Root top-scored for England in the first innings after they opted to bat as he struck a well-made 64. But there was limited support from the other end as Bumrah (4-46) and Mohammed Shami (3-28) struck at regular intervals to restrict the hosts to 183. India started their reply with a 97-run opening stand but lost quick wickets before KL Rahul (84), Ravindra Jadeja (56) and the tail-enders helped them to 278. Root's 109 in the second innings threatened a big target for India but they managed to limit it thanks to Bumrah's 5-64, leaving the visitors with 209 to win the first Test. India were 52 for 1 with the game tantalisingly poised but rain ruined the final day as the match ended in a draw.

Second Test, Lord's:In what turned out to be an encounter full of sharp twists and turns, India overcame England by 151 runs at Lord's. At the start of the final day, India were in front by just 154 runs and with four wickets in hand. However, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah stitched an unbeaten stand of 89 for the ninth wicket to put the pressure back on on England, as the visitors finished with 298 for 8 declared in their second essay to set a target of 272. Mohammed Siraj, Shami, Bumrah and Ishant Sharma then combined to send England hurtling to 120 all out. Siraj, in particular, impressed with a four-for in the second dig. Earlier, KL Rahul (129) and Rohit Sharma (83) had piloted India to competitive score of 364 in their first innings. For the hosts, James Anderson bagged a five-for. England, though, took a slender lead of 27 on the back of Joe Root's undefeated 180.

Third Test, Leeds: A clinical bowling display, led by spearhead James Anderson's three-for, had sealed the fate of the game in just under two sessions when India were shot down for 78 despite opting to bat. However, from India's point of view, the game would be remembered as the one where Pujara (91) and Kohli (55) regained some of that lost touch. The pair batted and battled through the final session on day 3, after Rohit's defiant fifty knock earlier, to give India a faint outside chance, only for Ollie Robinson to dash those hopes the next morning and level the series at 1-1. In between was another scintillating Root hundred - third in as many games - that gave England complete control. Root's record knock helped England to a strong 432 in reply and ensured the hosts don't have to bat again. Once The Pujara-Kohl alliance was broken, the slide was rather swift for India who lost by an innings and 78 runs.

Fourth Test, Oval: After conceding a first-innings lead of 99, thanks to batting contributions from the English lower-middle order, England would have fancied their chances of a back to back wins. But India fought back in the second innings, led by Rohit's superlative 127. Contributions came from all over - Pujara registered a second fifty, Rahul and Kohli made 40+ each, Pant posted a fifty too and Shardul Thakur made back-to-back half-centuries in the game. India had 466 on the board, and once the century opening stand between Burns and Hameed was broken, the bowlers ran through the English line-up to reinstate their lead in the series with an emphatic 157-run victory.

The fifth and final Test of the series was postponed to July 2022 with India pulling out due to several cases of COVID-19 in the camp.

Pakistan tour of West Indies, 2021

First Test, Kingston: The first Test between the West Indies and Pakistan in Jamaica too had its share of drama and action, with the hosts coming out on top by just one wicket. After bowling out Pakistan for 203, the West Indies needed 168 for a win. However, on a tricky pitch, they lost three quick wickets upfront. Jermaine Blackwood tried to resurrect the innings with an aggressive fifty but he fell to Hasan Ali. The West Indies soon found themselves in further trouble at 151 for 9 with Jomel Warrican getting out to Hasan. The last wicket pair of Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales then calmly took the side past the finish line to clinch a thrilling win. Incidentally, Seales also snared eight wickets in the game and was aptly adjudged the man of the match. On the other hand, Pakistan would rue grassed chances, including a couple of reprieves for Roach. The second Test of the series will be played at the same ground from August 20.

Second Test, Jamaica: Pakistan hit back with intent, racing time and weather to share the two-match series 1-1. West Indies opted to bowl and reduced the visitors to 2/3 inside four overs. But a fighting 166-run fourth-wicket stand between Babar Azam and Fawad Alam stabilized the visitors. Alam had to retire hurt as he was struggling from cramps in sapping conditions after which Kemar Roach returned the Pakistani captain. Pakistan ended Day 1 at 212/4. No play was possible due to rain on the second day. With a full day's rest, Alam recovered and returned to complete his fifth Test hundred, but Pakistan made a bold declaration at 302/9, just few overs before stumps as weather consumed time on Day 3 as well.

Pakistan started well with the ball, reducing West Indies to 39/3 at the end of the day's play. Shaheen Afridi then rattled the lower-order, recording career-best figures of 6/51 as the hosts slumped from 105/4 to 150 all-out. Pakistan brought out their T20 avatars in the second innings, scoring 176/6 in 27.2 overs, setting West Indies a target of 329. Kraigg Brathwaite and Co. were off to a pretty decent start, ending Day 4 at 49/1. But they lost their way on Day 5, slipping to 113/6 as Afridi, Hasan Ali and Nauman Ali hunted in pairs. Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers took the game deep and rain intervened too. But it cleared in time for Afridi to complete a 10-wicket haul for the match. West Indies bowled for 219, Pakistan won by 109 runs.
