Known for his flamboyant batting style, Syed Mushtaq Ali, was the first Indian to score a Test century overseas.He achieved this feat during India's tour of England in 1936. His 112 in the second innings at Old Trafford helped India draw the game after England had made 571 in their first innings. He had a great time in English conditions as he notched up four first-class tons on the tour.
He started his Test career as a left-arm spinner, who was supposed to bat at number 7 but an injury to regular opener, Dilawar Hussain, resulted in his promotion to the top of the order in the second essay. Along with Vijay Merchant, he formed one of India's most formidable opening partnerships of the yesteryears. Ali's attacking style and dynamic strokeplay, twinned with Merchant's cautious yet solid technique, made them an ideal pairing.
In 11 Test matches, Ali made 612 runs at an average of 32.21. Apart from his batting, he used to bowl left-arm spin from time to time and took 3 Test wickets. His first-class record though is even better. In 226 matches, he accumulated 13213 runs at an average of 35.90, including 93 scores of fifty or higher. The fact that he bagged 162 first-class wickets signifies that his bowling skills weren't bad either.
Ali was nominated as the vice-captain of the Indian team going to Australia in 1947/48, but he pulled out of the tour after the death of one of his brothers. In 1951/52, his final appearance for India became a special affair after India recorded its first-ever win in Tests by an innings and 8 runs, against England in Chennai.
Ali's aggression made him a popular icon among the younger generations. Keith Miller, in his foreword to Ali's autobiography, Cricket Delightful, called him "the Errol Flynn of cricket - dashing, flamboyant, swashbuckling and immensely popular wherever he played".
His son, Gulrez Ali and his grandson, Abbas Ali, both played first-class cricket as well. He was conferred the Padma Shri in 1964.The Indian domestic T20 competition is named after him.
He died in his sleep on June 18, 2005. He was 90 years old.
